Valet parking service now available

Aug. 7, 2014 - A new valet parking service is up and running in downtown Oak Park offering a convenient option to motorists affected by the coming redevelopment of the parcel of land at Lake Street and Forest Avenue. Now that the nearby parking garage has closed, the valet parking service, located on Lake Street just east of Forest Avenue, will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The cost will be $5 for up to three hours and $12 for three or more hours until closing.

Village officials say the valet service will offer a convenient parking alternative as demolition and redevelopment work at Lake and Forest gets underway later this fall. Regular permit holders at the now-closed garage have been relocated to nearby parking options, and the valet service is intended to serve visitors to the downtown area.

"Valet parking is part of our commitment to provide alternative parking options during the upcoming construction period," said Parking & Mobility Services Director Jill Velan. "We hope this new service makes it easier for everyone to visit our downtown."

Built decades ago, the shuttered garage at Lake and Forest has long surpassed its useful life, village officials said. Once the site is cleared, officials say it will take about 18 months to complete the 21-story mixed-use development planned for the site, which will include 270 rental apartments, 25,000 square feet of ground-level retail and an integrated garage with 588 parking spaces.

The $94-million project is projected to create construction jobs while it is being built, retail positions when it is completed and bring in an estimated $1.3 million in new property and sales taxes each year.

As the valet service becomes a regular fixture on Lake Street, village officials are reminding users to be mindful of the daily hours of operation to make sure they have retrieved their car by 5:30 p.m. each day.

The private company providing the service was selected through a competitive bid. For more information, email parking@oak-park.us. More information on the project planned for the garage site is posted at www.oak-park.us/projects.
