Prescription Drug Disposal

Medicine drug disposal box.jpg

Safe disposal of drugs is increasingly important, as trace residues of some medications can turn up in the water supply when prescription drugs are flushed down a drain or toilet.

Residents can safely dispose of expired and unwanted prescription medicines in the lobby of the Police Department on the lower level at Village Hall, 123 Madison St. A disposal box is also in the Oak Park Township parking lot located at 105 S. Oak Park Ave. No liquids and no sharps are allowed.

Sharps disposal

Residents in single-family homes and buildings with five or fewer units can schedule at-home collections of sharps through Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS).

The program requires residents to schedule a hazardous household waste pickup online at www.lrsrecycles.com/oakpark.

Opioid addiction treatment options

Substance use is a chronic disease that can be treated. Officials note that while everyone’s path to recovery is different, treatment is the first step.

The Illinois Helpline can help anyone struggling with opioid, alcohol and/or other drug use. Call 833.2FINDHELP to talk with a helpline specialist about individualized treatment services.

A tailored list of services in the area also is available by answering a few anonymous questions online at www.helplineil.org.
