The Rainscapes program contributes to design engineering as well as construction costs (labor, materials and equipment rental) for nature-based solutions. Homeowners may complete the installation themselves but will be reimbursed for the cost of materials only. The following are eligible nature-based solutions that may be covered as part of this program.
Rain gardens or bioswales
Let rain soak into a rain garden that uses porous soil and water-loving native plants. Rain gardens are bowl-shaped; bioswales are line-shaped.
Typical cost: $2,000–$5,000.
Dry wells or cisterns
Store rain in a below-ground dry well or cistern. Dry wells allow water to seep into the ground, while cisterns allow water to be pumped for reuse.
Dry well typical cost: $4,000–$15,000
Cistern typical cost: $10,000–$25,000+
Rain barrels
Store rain in a barrel that attaches to your downspout. Reuse the captured water for your garden!
Typical cost: $250
Permeable paving
Replace concrete or asphalt with interlocking permeable pavers that lets rain pass through.
Typical cost: Around $50 / square foot
Complementary downspout disconnections and French drains are also eligible when installed alongside another nature-based solution. Disconnecting downspouts from the municipal sewer system can help reduce the chances of backups into homes during heavy rain. French drains help convey water to other nature-based solutions.
