As temperatures rise, so does the threat of the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus. The best defense is to reduce the chances of mosquito bites. Recommended steps include limiting time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn, wearing long sleeves and pants, and applying insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Residents also are urged to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites by cleaning roof gutters, emptying birdbaths and storing containers upside down when not in use.
