A new three-digit number is now available for all Illinoisans experiencing a mental health crisis or those seeking other kinds of support related to suicide, mental health or substance use. By dialing 988, a caller will be connected to information, support and compassionate care from trained experts, either from one of six call centers in Illinois, or affiliates from a national network of providers. 988 callers will have the option of being connected to the Veterans Crisis Line, Spanish Language Crisis Line or the Illinois Lifeline to receive specialized, individualized support by call-takers trained in suicide prevention, de-escalation and stabilization. 988 is confidential, free, and available 24 hours a day.
