Sept. 4, 2013 - Oak Park Police made nine arrests and issued 25 citations during the recent Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown on impaired drivers and motorists not wearing seat belts.
While Oak Park Police are always on the lookout for impaired drivers, extra personnel were on the streets from Aug. 16 through Labor Day thanks to federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.
Police here arrested five motorists for driving under the influence, issued 25 citations for failure to wear seatbelts and made four arrests for various other violations.
Calling the special traffic enforcement effort a major success, Deputy Police Chief Anthony Ambrose expressed pride in Oak Park officers for their hard work and dedication to making Village streets safer.
“Drunk driving is more than a reckless choice by a few individuals” he said. “Impaired drivers cost the lives of thousands on America’s roads every year. Improving safety and reducing the chances of a traffic fatality on Village streets is a major focus of our traffic enforcement efforts.”
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over was launched in 1999 to raise awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence. The campaign supports high-visibility enforcement and public education, focusing on holidays that typically are the busiest travel times of the year.
Oak Park Police joined hundreds of police agencies throughout Illinois and nearly 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the country in this year’s campaign against impaired and unbuckled motorists.
