The Centers for Disease Control recommends inoculation for influenza as soon as vaccine becomes available since flu seasons are unpredictable and can begin as early as October.
Everyone should get a flu vaccine beginning by age 6 months, officials say, especially individuals who have medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease. Pregnant women and individuals 65 years and older also should be vaccinated, as well as people who live with or care for others who are at high risk of developing serious complications.
Parents of infants under age 2 are encouraged to contact the child’s physician to arrange for flu vaccinations.
Flu vaccine is offered at numerous commercial pharmacies, grocery stores and other retail sites in the Oak Park area. Most of these sites accept private insurances and Medicare Part B to help cover the cost of the shot. Many sites will vaccinate children as young as 18 months. Medicare HMO recipients should check with their insurer before scheduling an appointment.\
