May 8, 2015 - The Oak Park Fire Department rescued three residents from a structure fire on the 600 block of North Humphrey Avenue late Thursday night. Two victims – a 6-year-old child and an adult man – were found unresponsive on the second floor of the building and taken to area hospitals. A third victim, described as the child’s mother, escaped the building on her own and went to the hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The fire started just before midnight on Thursday, May 7 and quickly spread to an adjacent structure on the block. Fire departments in River Forest, North Riverside, Cicero, Forest Park, Elmwood Park, Stickney, Bellwood and Berwyn were called in to help contain the fire and prevent any further spread. At the height of the blaze, more than 40 firefighters from an array of area departments were battling the fire.
“Our mutual aid network functioned exactly as it was designed and allowed us to bring in additional resources from neighboring suburbs to fight this fire,” said Oak Park Fire Chief Tom Ebsen. “I’m grateful to our firefighters and to our partner agencies for their prompt, professional response.”
The two properties involved in the fire were heavily damaged, Ebsen said, and the Red Cross has been in touch with displaced residents to provide aid.
“Our thoughts are with the families affected by this fire,” said Oak Park Village President Anan Abu-Taleb. “It is a testament to the hard work of our local fire departments that the fire was contained and additional damage was prevented.”
The cause of the fire is unknown. Fire officials expect to begin an investigation in coordination with the Police Department and the Illinois Fire Marshall’s Office. For more information about the Fire Department, go to www.oak-park.us/fire or call 708.358.5600.
