Feb. 13, 2019 – Residents and business operators interested in learning more about major improvements planned this year for Madison Street are invited to an open house scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m., Thurs., Feb. 21 at Percy Julian Middle School, 416 S. Ridgeland Ave.
The event will offer attendees an opportunity to learn about the details of the project that will convert the east-west roadway to three lanes and incorporate pedestrian-friendly attributes including accessible ramps, marked crosswalks, bump-outs to reduce distances at crossings, mid-street pedestrian refuges and enhanced crossing signals.
Representatives from the Village and the engineering firm overseeing construction will be available at the open house to answer questions about parking, driveway access, project timelines and other construction-related topics.
Attendees also will be able to view a full project map, design renderings and sign up for construction updates via email.
Commonly referred to as a road diet, the project is set to begin in the spring and be completed in the fall. In addition to the pedestrian safety features, the project also will include new pavement from Harlem Avenue to Austin Boulevard, additional parking spaces, marked bicycle lanes and posted public transit bus stops.
Major infrastructure improvements also are part of the project, including new and refurbished underground sewer lines along portions of the street.
Madison Street will remain open during construction, officials say, including access to businesses, drive-thru services and parking lots. Safe, passable walking routes also will be maintained along Madison Street throughout the project.
