Charges filed in 2016 drive-by shooting

April 6, 2018 – The tenacity of Oak Park Police has led to charges against a Chicago man for an early morning drive-by shooting on South Oak Park Avenue in 2016.

Rasheed Mujkovic, 25, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with the shooting of a 21-year-old Berwyn man who was walking with three companions in the 1000 block of South Oak Park Avenue at about 2:30 a.m., on May 28, 2016.

Mujkovic, who already is in custody in Chicago on unrelated first-degree murder charges in connection with an incident that occurred within hours of the Oak Park shooting, was linked to the 2016 shooting here with forensic evidence gathered by Oak Park Police.

“These charges coming nearly two years after the incident underscore the Oak Park Police Department’s never-give-up approach to crime investigation,” said Chief Anthony Ambrose. “Incidents of this kind tend to make a splash and then quickly fade from public attention. But in this department, the investigation never ends until the case is closed.”

According to Police, the victim and three companions had exited the CTA Blue Line station and were walking south on Oak Park Avenue when they exchanged words with the occupants of a sedan parked at the curb.

Moments later, the sedan reportedly approached the group at a slow speed before witnesses heard one shot believed to have been fired from the driver’s side rear window. The vehicle then fled southbound on Oak Park Avenue.

The shooting victim sustained a gunshot wound to the torso. He was treated at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood and later recovered from his wounds, which were considered serious.

While no motive for the shooting was determined, Police say it likely was gang related.

Mujkovic is being held in the Cook County Correctional Center awaiting trial on charges related to the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Chicago man during a fight inside a Portage Park neighborhood gas station over the May 2016 Memorial Day weekend.

Any criminal charges are merely allegations and all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
