Aug. 2, 2023 - The Oak Park Farmers’ Market is capping off National Farmers’ Market Week with its popular Corn Roast on Saturday, August 12.
Fresh-picked corn from Market growers will be sold by the ear hot off the roaster from about 9:30 a.m. until supplies are gone at the Market in the Pilgrim Church parking lot at 460 Lake St.
Patrons are encouraged to bring cash to the fundraiser event as credit cards are not accepted when purchasing roasted corn. Each ear will be sold for $2.
This year's Corn Roast is a zero-waste event, meaning all corn cobs, wrappers and take-away bags are compostable.
The annual Corn Roast is Oak Park's way of joining markets across the country in the celebration of National Farmers' Market Week running Aug. 7-13. This year’s campaign focus is providing equal access for all Villagers to locally grown, nutritious sustainably produced food, regardless of income level.
Farmers' markets foster shared values between community members and farmers which can work to create a more fair and sustainable food system. As part of the Public Health Department, the Market is supporting a healthy community with various programs. Dedicated to expanding access to high quality local food, the grant-funded SNAP/Link/EBT matching coupon incentives program assures lower-income shoppers a chance to enjoy the Market bounty. Healthy cooking demonstrations and child-friendly activities support the ongoing commitment to educating this community.
The Oak Park Farmers' Market began in 1976 with just one farmer, and currently hosts 28 vendors.
Oak Park area residents and visitors are invited to enjoy this dynamic outdoor marketplace which brings fresh produce, meats, cheese, eggs, baked goods, breads, flowers, honey, hot artisanal cheese sandwiches, and grains from more than 275 acres of productive farmland in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan.
The Oak Park Farmers' Market is open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine every Saturday through October.
