Cultural Events Mark Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Oak Park

Sept. 14, 2023The Village of Oak Park is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with a host of new cultural and community events in 2023.

Keynote Latinx Speaker: Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez

Storyteller, public theologian, feminist and advocate Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez will visit the Veteran’s Room at the Oak Park Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. She is the author of “For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts.” A first-generation student and immigrant, Mojica Rodríguez merges storytelling with pedagogy to help people understand the larger forces at play, also known as systemic oppression.

The visit is presented by the Village in collaboration with the Oak Park Township, the Oak Park Public Library and the Oak Park Latine planning committee.

Latinx Roundtable Talk: Prosperity, Power and Progress

As part of Oak Park’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, a community roundtable discussion centered around the themes of prosperity, progress and power will be held at the Oak Park Public Library in the Veteran’s Room on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. Maya Puentes, Oak Park Community Relations Commissioner, and Nora Sanchez, Latine Language & Culture Librarian at the Oak Park Public Library, will moderate the discussion. No registration is required for this event and complimentary refreshments will be served.

Language Access Listening Session

Community members are invited to join the Village of Oak Park’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. for a conversation about the Village’s language access needs at Village Hall and other municipal facilities. The listening session will be held at Tacos '76 (838 Madison St.).

¡VIVA! Festival

Fun for the entire family awaits at Oak Park’s ¡VIVA! Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 2-6 p.m. This outdoor event, held on the south lawn at Village Hall, will feature food, entertainment from an all-female mariachi ensemble and Peruvian folk dancers, face painters and activities for kids, piñatas and much more. Outdoor Movie Screening: “Encanto”

The Village’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration wraps up the evening of Oct. 13 with a screening of Disney’s Encanto. Originally planned to be held outdoors, the free event has been moved to the Madison Street Theater, 1010 Madison St., due to inclement weather in the forecast. Join us for a fun-filled movie night and get ready to be enchanted by the magical world of Encanto! Admission is free, however, registration is encouraged as space is limited - click here to registerPopcorn has been generously donated by Wells Street Popcorn
