Flash flood warning

***July 3 update *** - LRS will collect flood damaged bulk items with no pink stickers required as many Oak Parkers clean up basements after Sunday’s heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding in some parts of town.

Items should be placed in the regular garbage collection area. Garbage trucks will make the pickups on the regularly scheduled trash and recycling collection day over the next few weeks. Note that collection will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week starting Tuesday due to the Fourth of July holiday.

As was the case this past weekend, heavy rain events can overwhelm the region’s sewer system, causing sewage and storm water to back up into basements. Tips on ways to prevent the chances of basement flooding are posted at www.oak-park.us/backupprevention.

-------

*** Update at 3:30 p.m. *** - Please be advised that Illinois State Police (ISP) have closed I-290 westbound at Harlem Ave. due to flooding at Des Plaines Ave. It is also closed eastbound at Des Plaines Ave. in Forest Park.

The Village of Oak Park has Public Works staff on call to investigate instances of standing water throughout the community this afternoon and evening. Please be aware that in some cases, the system is designed so that water collects on streets rather than in basements. Staff will be working throughout the weekend to address any issues or concerns throughout the Village, including with LRS for additional pickups of flood-related debris.

________

July 2, 2023Village of Oak Park officials are monitoring the current weather system. Oak Park has been included in the flash flood warning issued July 2 at 10:15 a.m. CDT until 3:15 p.m. CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Officials are in hourly communications with the NWS and will alert the community to any changes.

NWS has informed the Village that a doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated slow-moving and heavy rainfall across the area. Up to three (3) inches of rain has fallen with rain rates up to two (2) inches per hour. Additional rainfall amounts of one (1) to three (3) inches are possible.

A flash flood warning means rapid-onset flooding is imminent or may already be occurring. Persons along creeks, drainage ditches and other waterways should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.

Officials also warn that most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roadways.
