Oak Park Farmers' Market Opens 49th Season

May 13, 2024The Oak Park Farmers’ Market opens its 49th season on Saturday, May 18. The market features more than two dozen vendors and various activities throughout the season and is held every Saturday (rain or shine) from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., through October 26 in the Pilgrim Church parking lot, 460 Lake St.

Oak Park area residents and visitors alike are invited to enjoy this dynamic, producers-only marketplace that brings fresh produce, meats, cheese, eggs, baked goods, breads, flowers, honey, and grains from farmland in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan.

“I’m very excited to welcome in the 49th season, with so many of our favorite vendors returning, plus a new wild-caught salmon vendor,” said Oak Park Farmers’ Market Manager Jack Carmody. “We will be featuring several pop-up vendors this year, who will be offering unique products periodically throughout the season. We have a full programming lineup as well, with children’s activities and bake sales, along with the famous Church donuts, fresh coffee and live bluegrass music. The Market is so important to the community, and provides a welcoming environment where people can access fresh food and create and sustain community connections while seeing neighbors and friends.”

The Market is a true community effort, and offers the opportunity for friends and fans to volunteer their time to help keep the Market running smoothly. Shifts are available to set up, tear down, be a sustainability ambassador or to answer questions at the Info Booth any Saturday of the season. Interested volunteers can email farmersmarket@oak-park.us to be added to the volunteer list.

“The effort to execute a successful Farmers’ Market every year involves many people and it starts with our dedicated Farmers’ Market citizen commission,” said Carmody. “This dedicated group works diligently year-round to ensure we have the best of the best in Oak Park and we are grateful for their enthusiasm.”

The first two weeks of the Market, May 18 and 25, will feature a dozen sustainability-focused organizations for the annual Go Green Days exhibition. This year will feature the Chicago Region Trees Initiative at Morton Arboretum and the OneEarth Film Festival for the first time.

Parking is available on streets adjacent to the market, and shoppers also have free access to parking in the OPRF High School parking structure off Scoville Ave. The site is also accessible via public transportation.

Courtesy of Oak Park Township, transportation offering curb-to-curb service will pick up anyone (all ages) who lives in Oak Park or River Forest for a suggested $1 donation and provide them a round-trip ride to the Market. Reserve a pick-up by calling 708.383.4806 on weekday mornings.

Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own bags and coffee cups to the Oak Park Farmers’ Market as well as small reusable lidded storage containers (i.e. small used yogurt containers) for berries and other goodies.

A majority of vendors at the Oak Park Farmers’ Market accept cash, credit/debit cards, and Senior Coupons. All approved food vendors accept SNAP/Link cards for payment.

“We welcome everyone,” continued Carmody. “And we are proud to match SNAP/Link Card purchases up to $25 per cardholder.”

As always, there are special events at the Market scattered throughout the season. The annual Corn Roast will take place Aug. 10, while the Pie Bake-Off is slated for Sept.7, and the Market wraps up with the annual Stone Soup celebration on closing day, Oct. 26.
