Oct. 26, 2015 – Oak Park Police will be out in force on Halloween cracking down on impaired drivers with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort.
“We are giving a fair warning to motorists to keep the party off the road this Halloween,” said Deputy Police Chief Tony Ambrose. “Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is deadly, illegal and will get you pulled over and arrested in Oak Park."
Ambrose added, "If you want to stay safe and out of jail this Halloween, make a plan to get home without driving if you’re impaired.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from 2009 to 2013, 43 percent of all people killed in motor vehicle crashes on Halloween night – 6 p.m. Oct. 31 to 5:59 a.m. Nov. 1 – were in crashes involving a drunk driver.
Children out trick-or-treating and the adults accompanying them are also at risk. NHTSA reported that 19 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes on Halloween night for the same period involved drunk drivers.
Official trick-or-treat hours in Oak Park are 3 to 7 p.m.
Driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher is illegal in every state. Even if you drive impaired and aren’t killed or seriously injured, convicted motorists could end up paying hefty fines and lose driving privileges, officials say.
