June 5, 2015 – Oak Park Police have secured an arrest warrant for a 43-year-old convicted felon wanted in connection with a home invasion on May 21 in the 1000 block of South Oak Park Avenue.
Police obtained the warrant late Thursday for Mark Barnes, current address unknown, after evidence gathered at the scene linked him to the site where a 27-year-old woman was assaulted, bound and robbed of $25 in cash.
Barnes is described as an African American male, six feet, one-inch tall, weighing 190 pounds. He was convicted of criminal sexual assault with a firearm in 1997, but had been released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody in April. His last known address was in Maywood.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Barnes is urged to call the Oak Park Police Department at 708.386.3800. Anonymous tips may be made by calling 708.434.1636 or online at www.oak-park.us/police.
“Solving this crime is a priority,” said Oak Park Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley. “Fundamental investigation techniques and patience have given us a solid suspect. Now, we need to find and bring him in to ensure that no one else has to endure the trauma of such a crime at his hands.
“We are urging anyone with any information on the suspect to call the police. Concerned, involved citizens willing to pick up the phone and share information may be essential in aiding us in apprehending this individual. We hope that word will get out and someone will step forward with the tip we need to bring him in.”
The victim, a Chicago resident who was housesitting for a coworker, told police her assailant knocked on the door, asked for a name she did not recognize and then left. He returned a few minutes later and tried to engage her in conversation. She said when she attempted to close the door, the man forced his way inside and displayed a handgun.
