Remembering Detective Allan Reddins

On Fri., Nov. 29, 2024, the Village of Oak Park suffered an unspeakable loss when Detective Allan Reddins fell victim to a senseless act of violence and lost his life in the line of duty at the age of 40. Reddins’ death is the first in the line of duty of an Oak Park Police Officer since 1938. He had been a member of the department since 2019.

According to investigators, Reddins was shot after responding to a call of a person observed with a gun leaving the Chase Bank in the 1000 block of Lake Street. He was taken to Loyola Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Candlelight Vigil - Fri., Dec. 6

A candlelight vigil will take place in the courtyard at Village Hall (123 Madison St.) on Fri., Dec. 6, marking the one-week anniversary of Detective Reddins’ death. The remembrance will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m., and is expected to include remarks from Police Chief Shatonya Johnson, Village President Vicki Scaman and others.

Visitation - Wed., Dec. 11

Family and friends will gather on Wed., Dec. 11 at Leak & Sons Funeral Home (7838 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, IL 60619) for a visitation from 1 – 8 p.m. A police officer walk through is expected to take place at approximately 6 p.m. for members of the Oak Park Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.

Funeral Service - Thurs., Dec. 12

On Thurs., Dec. 12, a wake begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Apostolic Church of God (6320 S. Dorchester Ave., Chicago, IL 60637) in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. A private burial will follow.

For those interested in donating to support a fund for the Reddins family, Oak Park Lodge #8, Fraternal Order of Police, is currently collecting donations. Money raised will go directly to a financial account that has been set up by the Fraternal Order of Police in support of the Reddins the family, in particular for his son who attends college out of state and his mother who is receiving medical treatment.

Blue Ribbons

The Village and Oak Park Police Department appreciate the continued outpouring of condolences and support during this difficult time.

A limited supply of blue ribbons are available in the lobby at Village Hall for community members interested in displaying a ribbon in honor of Detective Allan Reddins. The ribbons can be picked up during regular business hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the candlelight vigil Friday while supplies last.
